The process
How Herringbone Fitting Works
Step 1: Measure & Plan
Herringbone requires careful planning before a single board is cut. We measure the room, calculate the centre point, and plan the layout so the pattern runs straight and the cuts at the edges are balanced. We give you a written quote before we start.
Uneven subfloor? See our floor levelling service in Birmingham.
Step 2: You Supply the Boards
You buy your herringbone laminate, engineered wood, LVT or parquet from any retailer. We advise on what to buy if you need guidance — material type, board size, thickness — but you choose and purchase the boards.
Step 3: We Fit the Pattern
We lay the herringbone from the centre out, cutting each border piece by hand for a clean finish. Door bars and beading are fitted last. The room is left clean and ready to use.

Herringbone Flooring Fitting Cost in Birmingham
Herringbone flooring fitting cost in Birmingham is typically 30–50% more than a standard straight lay — a bedroom in herringbone laminate costs roughly £180–£270 in labour alone. How much it costs to fit herringbone flooring depends on the material, room size and whether any subfloor preparation is needed.
Herringbone costs more to fit than a straight lay because each board must be cut at a 45° angle, the pattern must be planned from the room's centre point, and mistakes are costly to correct. The labour rate is higher regardless of the material. Prices below are for labour only — boards, underlay and adhesive are supplied by you.

FAQ
Herringbone Flooring Questions Answered
Straight answers about herringbone fitting costs, materials and the areas we cover.
Herringbone flooring fitting cost in Birmingham is typically 30–50% more than a straight lay. A bedroom in herringbone laminate costs roughly £180–£270 in labour; engineered wood herringbone costs £225–£410 for the same room. Contact FitFloors for a free written quote — the price depends on material, room size and subfloor condition.
Herringbone laminate uses composite boards with a printed wood effect — more affordable and easier to replace. Herringbone engineered wood has a real wood veneer top layer — it looks and feels like solid wood but is more stable. Both use the same herringbone pattern; the difference is the board material and price.
Yes, with the right material. Herringbone LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is fully waterproof and ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Herringbone laminate and engineered wood are not suitable for rooms with standing water. We advise on the right material during our free quote visit.
A standard bedroom takes a full day — longer than a straight lay because of the planning, angled cuts and border work. A large open-plan room may take two days. We confirm exact timings when we quote.
Yes, always. Fitting herringbone from the centre is the correct method — it ensures the pattern runs straight and the cuts at each wall are balanced. Starting from a wall produces a skewed pattern that's obvious once the furniture is out. We plan the centre point before any boards are laid.
Herringbone laminate fitting in Birmingham costs roughly £180–£270 for a standard bedroom (15m²). The higher cost compared to straight-lay laminate reflects the additional planning, angled cuts and border fitting. Prices are for labour only — the laminate boards are supplied by you.
It depends on what is underneath. Herringbone can be floated over a flat, firm existing floor if the surface is level. It cannot go over carpet. Herringbone engineered wood and parquet that need to be glued down require a clean concrete or screed subfloor. We check the subfloor during our free quote visit.
