What we do
Floor Levelling Services in Birmingham
Before any flooring is fitted — carpet, laminate, LVT, engineered wood or vinyl — the subfloor must be flat, dry and solid. Uneven subfloors cause floating floors to bounce and creak, LVT tiles to lift at the edges, and carpet to wear unevenly. FitFloors assesses the subfloor as part of every fitting quote and carries out levelling work on the same visit when needed.
Self-Levelling Compound
Liquid compound poured to fill low spots and minor undulations up to 6mm. Sets firm in 2–4 hours — ideal before LVT, vinyl and laminate.
Floor Screeding
Sand-and-cement screed laid to a consistent depth for larger jobs, deeper voids or full floor replacement. Dries harder and more durable than levelling compound.
Grinding High Spots
A concrete grinder or angle grinder knocks down raised ridges, old adhesive lumps, bolt holes and protruding fixings that would prevent flat laying.
Subfloor Assessment
Included free with every fitting quote. We check for flex, hollow spots, cracks, damp and height differences across the room before advising on the best preparation method.
The process
How Floor Levelling Works
Step 1: Subfloor Survey
We assess the floor using a straight edge and spirit level, checking for height differences, hollow areas, cracks, flexing boards and damp. We note the worst areas and advise on the best levelling method. Survey is included free with every flooring quote.
Step 2: Preparation
We clean the subfloor, prime the surface where needed, fill cracks with flexible filler, and grind down any high spots. Proper preparation before pouring levelling compound is what separates a lasting result from one that lifts six months later.
Step 3: Levelling or Screeding
We pour and spread self-levelling compound for most residential jobs. For deeper voids, new builds or full floor renovation, we lay sand-and-cement screed. Both methods leave a flat, hard surface ready for your flooring once cured.
Prices
Floor Screed and Levelling Cost per m²
Floor screed cost per m² in Birmingham is typically £8–£20 for labour and materials — self-levelling compound costs £8–£12 per m² and sand-and-cement screed costs £12–£20 per m². Floor levelling cost for a standard 15m² room typically runs £120–£300 depending on the method, the depth of compound required and the condition of the existing subfloor.
Self-levelling compound is cheaper and faster for thin applications (up to 6mm). Sand-and-cement screed is necessary for deeper fills, damp-prone areas or when a thicker, harder wearing base is needed. Both prices include materials. Subfloor assessment is included free with every FitFloors fitting quote — we only recommend levelling when the floor actually needs it.

FAQ
Floor Levelling Questions Answered
Straight answers about floor levelling and screed costs, drying times and the areas we cover.
Floor levelling in Birmingham typically costs £8–£12 per m² for self-levelling compound (labour and materials). Sand-and-cement screeding costs £12–£20 per m². A standard 15m² room costs £120–£300 depending on method and depth. Subfloor assessment is free with every FitFloors fitting quote. Contact FitFloors for a written quote.
Self-levelling compound is a liquid mix poured to fill dips and undulations up to 6mm — it flows to level and sets in 2–4 hours. Floor screed is a stiffer sand-and-cement mix laid to a greater depth for larger voids or new builds. Screed takes longer to cure but is harder-wearing.
Not always. Carpet tolerates minor unevenness better than hard flooring does. We check the subfloor during every fitting quote and only recommend levelling if the height difference is significant enough to affect the carpet's lay or wear. For LVT and laminate, the tolerance is much tighter and levelling is more often needed.
Self-levelling compound is typically walkable in 2–4 hours and ready for most flooring types in 24 hours, though this varies by depth and ambient temperature. Sand-and-cement screed takes longer — 1 day per mm of depth for the first 40mm, then slower. We confirm cure times when we quote.
Yes. Glue-down LVT including Karndean and Amtico requires a particularly flat subfloor — any undulation above 3mm over 2m will telegraph through the tiles after fitting. We assess and level as part of our LVT fitting service. Subfloor levelling is quoted separately from the LVT fitting labour.
Sometimes. Old ceramic tiles can be levelled over if they are firmly fixed. Loose tiles must come up first. Old adhesive residue (bitumen, carpet gripper adhesive) can be levelled over in some cases and must be removed in others. We advise during the free quote visit based on what we find.
Floor screed cost per m² in Birmingham is typically £12–£20 including labour and materials. Self-levelling compound is £8–£12 per m². Costs vary with depth — a thicker screed uses more material and takes longer to lay. Contact FitFloors for a written quote based on your floor area and the depth needed.
